About the Robert Presley Detention Center - Riverside County Jail

The Robert Presley Detention Center is located at 4000 Orange St in Riverside, California. The Riverside Jail itself is operated by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The jail is used to house prisoners who have been convicted of misdemeanors, and to temporarily house those charged with different types of felonies while they are waiting for court appearances. If an inmate is in the RPDC, they are either waiting for a court appearance, or waiting for someone to post their bail. Besides housing, the jail also provides the transportation that the inmates will need to get to court appearances and transfers to other correctional facilities if necessary.

The Robert Presley Detention Center was originally built in 1933 and was just known as the Riverside County Jail. In 1989, the name was changed to the Robert Presley Riverside Jail or simply, RPDC (Robert Presley Detention Center).  Along with the name change, a more modern jail facility was opened across the road from the site now called the ‘Old Jail’. The jail currently includes male and female sections, a modern business office, visiting area, and the main jail area which includes a dispensary, detox cell, and solitary cells so all inmates unique needs will be taken care of. In 2011, the ‘Old Jail’ was closed and only the new facility remains. This new facility has accommodations for 1,100 people.

Inmates at the Robert Presley Detention Center are offered a wide variety of services to help them rehabilitate for when they are released. Services include Alcoholics Anonymous, education programs to allow them to learn advanced computer skills, or obtain their G.E.D certificate. They also have access to religions services, counseling from various chaplains, and a library for entertainment and continued learning.

Inmate Information for the Robert Presley Detention Center

Inmates of the Robert Presley Detention Center are waiting to either be released, or moved somewhere else. If you need to get information about someone who is being held at the RPDC, you can call (951) 9550-4500 and speak directly to a deputy. To get information, you will need to know the inmate’s full name, and date of birth. The deputy can also give you information about a specific case. Remember that inmates in custody at the Robert Presley Detention Center are usually only there for a limited time. Most inmates are arraigned soon after being arrested, typically within 48 hours. If you need specific case information, you can find it on the Riverside County case information website, or also ask the deputy who answers you phone call.

How do I Post Bail for an Inmate at the Robert Presley Detention Center?

If you would like to post bail for an inmate at the Robert Presley Detention Center, you have two options. One is to post cash bail, which means you pay the entire bail amount in cash. Most people don’t have enough cash on hand to afford to pay this bail. Because of that, most people opt to purchase bail bonds. A bail bond is obtained by paying up to 10% of the bail amount to a bail bondsman (also known as a bail agent). This amount is non-refundable, but no further amount will have to be paid if the defendant appears at all necessary court appearances. 

If the defendant fails to show up, they’ll have to pay the entire bail amount. The bail bond fee is always non-refundable, as it is the way the bail bondsman gets paid for their services. You can find a bail bondsman by searching on the internet, or in the phone book. Make sure the one you choose is properly licensed and keep copies of any paperwork they give you.

If you posted cash bail, and the inmate attends all of their court appearances, the bail amount will be mostly refunded, though a small administrative fee will be retained by the court.

How do I Call an Inmate at the Riverside County Jail?

Inmates at the Robert Presley Detention Center are entitled to one free phone call to someone on the outside. If they want to make additional calls, they either need to pay for them with a calling card, or call collect. Inmates aren’t allowed to receive incoming calls. To ensure a loved one can call you from the jail, you’ll want to check with your telephone plan to make sure collect calls are not blocked.

How do I Send Mail to an Inmate at the Robert Presley Detention Center?

Inmates are allowed to send and receive as many letters as they want every day. To send mail, address it to ‘The Inmate’s Name’, Robert Presley Detention Center, P.O. Box 710, Riverside CA, 92501. Make sure you include your return address on the envelope, if you don’t do so, the letter will be returned. Dirty mail will also be returned to sender. Do not send any prohibited items, as they will not be delivered. Examples of prohibited items include, 10 or more photographs, sexually explicit material, mail that is written with non-standard writing equipment like gel pens, lipstick, etc, mail that is contaminated with strong scents such as cologne, any kind of stickers or stamps, mail written on sticky notes, or mail that contains staples of paperclips. If in doubt, call ahead before sending the mail.

Newspapers and books must be sent directly from a publisher to the Riverside Jail, or verified mail order company, and must be delivered by the US Postal Service or they will be rejected.

Please note that care packages may not be sent via mail to the Riverside Jail / Robert Presley Detention Center.

How do I Put Money on the Books or Send Money to an Inmate at the Robert Presley Detention Center?

Each inmate at the Robert Presley Detention Center has their own in-house money account that allows them to purchase items from the jail’s commissary. The commissary stocks writing materials for sending letters, and comforts such as snacks, hygiene items and cosmetics. If the inmate had money in their possession when arrested, that amount will be place in their account. Loved ones can also deposit money to this account by visiting the jail lobby between 6:30am and 4:00pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The jail lobby is open from 6:30am to 4:00pm, then again from 6:30pm and 4:00am on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You can deposit funds as cash, or a certified US Postal Service money order. The jail doesn’t make change, so make sure you bring the exact amount you want to deposit.

You can also mail money to an inmate at the Robert Presley Detention Center, but is must be sent as a US Postal Service money order. Cash and personal checks won’t be accepted.

How do I Visit Someone at the Robert Presley Jail?

Inmates at the Robert Presley Detention Center may receive two visits every seven days. Each visit may last up to 45 minutes. You are not allowed to just show up to visit, all visits must be pre-booked at least 24 hours in advance of the visit. Usually, you can schedule your visit on any day of the week, between 9:00 am and 5:00pm, but be sure to visit the jails website before calling in to book your visit. This is because each unit has slightly different visiting hours. Only two adults and two children can attend a visit. The children must be with their parent, or legal guardian while they visit.

When you visit an inmate at the Robert Presley Detention Center, you will have to show a valid government issued photo I.D. to prove who you are. You should arrive up to 20 minutes prior to your scheduled visit so you can go through the screening process. Do not bring any items besides your car keys. If you brought a newborn along, you are also permitted to bring a baby bottle. All other items must remain outside the visiting area.  If it is suspected that you have a forbidden substance with you, such as alcohol, drugs, firearms, cigarettes, or anything else that is prohibited at a visit, you may be searched. If prohibited items are found, they will be taken from you, and depending on what they are, you may be arrested yourself.

You are not allowed to give the inmate anything during the visit to the Riverside Jail. This includes food and drinks. You are also prohibited from taking pictures.

The Robert Presley Detention Center also expects proper dress from those visiting the facility. People wearing gang related images, sexually suggestive clothing, or anything else that may be offensive will be denied entrance.

How do I Request the Release of an Inmate's Property at the Presley Detention Center?

When an inmate is arrested and taken to the RPDC (Robert Presley Detention Center), the possessions on their person at the time will be stored for them, and returned at their release. If they wish, they can arrange for someone to come pick up their belongings. They designate this wish by filling out a property release form. The person coming to collect the belongs must bring valid ID. To drop off items for an inmate, or to have them sign documents, you will need to phone the detention center and arrange a time to come to the lobby.

If the inmate has money they want released to someone outside the jail, they need to designate someone to withdraw it from their prison account within 24 hours of their arrest. After 24 hours, their money will only be released if they are released, or if ordered by the court.
