In 2009, he successfully argued orally before the California Supreme Court in the matter of In re Sotero Gomez ,45 Cal.4th 650 (2009). The Gomez case addressed the issue of whether the landmark United States Supreme Court case of Cunningham v. California is retroactively applicable to cases on collateral review. The Gomez case in which the Supreme Court ruled in Mr. Oliver's favor resulted in the early release of hundreds of prisoners.
Recently, Attorney Vincent Oliver represented an appellant in the matter of Pulido v. Superior Court (2013) 221 Cal.App 4th 1403. In the Pulido case, he argued successfully before the California Court of Appeal for the 2nd District that the right of a habeas petitioner to compel an out of state or out of county review of witnesses by a specially appointed commissioner was applicable to post conviction matters. The Pulido case which resulted in a published opinion was a matter of first impression and greatly expanded the rights of those seeking relief in post conviction proceedings.
